Bulgaria: Bratsigovo – an example of sustainable development on local level
The municipality of Bratsigovo is located in Southern Bulgaria in the Rhodope Mountains. The population of the municipality amounts to 9,798 inhabitants. The main resources of the region are: forests, preserved nature, mineral water springs, dam lakes, rich flora and fauna.
The municipality policy include:
- Sustainable exploitation of natural resources and preservation of the environment and
- Sustainable energy development towards energy independence through implementation of EE measures and use of RES – a means of raising the standard of Bratsigovo Municipality
Bratsigo Municipality is champion in the use of resources under the Public Investment Scheme 2014.
The municipality signed up to the Covenant of Mayors in 2015 and is currently developing its sustanable energy action plan.
Bratsigovo implemented energy efficiency measures and use of RES in 11 buildings including the municipal administration, cultural homes, schools, kindergartens, sports hall, municipal institutions for the care and protection of kids, centers for elderly people with disabilities:
- Installed biomass boilers (4.5 MW)
- Installed solar thermal panels (160 m2)
The implementation of these measures resulted in cost savings of 130,550 EUR per year.
The projects were funded by Ministry of regional development and public works of Bulgaria, Energy Fund, National Trust EcoFund, Ministry of environment and water of Bulgaria and Bratsigovo Municipality’s own resource.
Moreover, Bratsigovo implements innovative projects, such as insallation of PV panels in a public building. 112 PV panels (30kW), generating 33.60 MWh electricity per year, were installed on the roof of hospital building. The municipality invested the amount of 41,976 EUR using its own resources.
