Bulgaria: Energy efficiency measures in Silistra
Energy efficiency measures in Silistra – Street lighing, Boiler Reconstruction and Solar Thermal Installation
The city of Silistra is located on the bank of the Danube river. It is te 26th largest municpality in Bulgaria with 66,500 inhabitants. Local idustries are oriented to food, textiles, electronics, chemical and tourism. Near to the city is the beautiful natural reserve Srebarna. The region is also an important agricultural area.
At the time of the project Silistra used inefficient mercury lamps for street lighting, the heating systems in municipal budings were old oil-burning boilers and the thermal comfort of these buildings very low.
For these reasons the municipality decided to implement a project for implementation of energy efficiency measures in order to increase the comfort of its citizens and to decrease energy consumption and CO2 emmissions.
The project includes the following measures for improvement of energy efficiency:
- Optimisation and renovation of street lighting consisiting of: replacement of 65% of the luminaires with new fixtures and energy efficient lamps, redesign of the system, installation of double tariff electricity meters and automatic controls;
- Retroffiting of inefficient diesel burners of heating systems, installation of automatic controls for these systems, boiler change, improvement of building insulation of three buidings (a school for children from minority groups, a home for elderly people, the building of the municipality);
- Installation of solar thermal collector on the roof of the home for elderly people.
The calcuation of CO2 emmissions savings includes both emissions from oil-burning boiler and from electricity generation. The achieved savings amount to 436.40 t CO2/year.
The project reduced the annual muncipal costs for street lighting by 59 % and for heating of the three buildings by 53 %.
The project improved the indoor climate of the buildings that were underheated before the implementation of the energy saving measures.
The improved street lighting reduced traffic incidents and crime rate, while creating a pleasant ambiance.
The project is a good example how measures for energy efficiency can:
- Save energy;
- Decrease CO2 emmissions and improving air quality;
- Improve living standard;
- Save money.
